DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
The Department is a part of Faculty of Life Sciences in the University of Jammu. The Environmental Sciences subject was introduced in 2004 as a compulsory course for undergraduate students. From the session 2018-19 onwards, skill enhancement courses of this subject have also been introduced in this college under choice-based credit system (CBCS). The course intends to develop conscious citizens with an awareness of the environment which will provide a deep understanding of the total environment and its associated problems. The department adopts classroom and field-based approach for teaching environmental sciences and ensuring that students develop an overall understanding of the subject.
Vision
- To create environmental awareness and impart education for meaningful action that leads to a desirable and healthy environment at local, national and global scale.
- To provide value and ethics based environmental education raised on the strong pillars of our rich ancient environmental wisdom.
- To promote significant social and environmental change towards the creation of a more equitable and sustainable environment.
- To empower students to develop the necessary skills that are imperative to make informed decisions and execute them.
Mission
- To create individuals having sound knowledge, appropriate attitude, motivation, commitment and skill to actively participate towards the improvement of the environment and contribute to the efficient management of environmental issues.
- To work towards environmental alertness, sustainability, community sensitization and inculcation of individual accountability for their actions.
The department imparts environmental education through following Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC):
- Environmental Studies-1 (Semester-I, AECC, 2 Credits)
- Environmental Studies-2 (Semester-II, AECC, 2 Credits)
- Solid Waste Management (Semester-III, SEC, 4 Credits)
- Environmental Impact Assessment (Semester-IV, SEC, 4 Credits)
- Environmental Pollution and Management (Semester-V, SEC, 4 Credits)
- Environmental Hazards: Concept and Management (Semester-VI, SEC, 4 Credits)
The students enrolled in the Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) have to complete 2 credits each in theory and practical course (Total= 4 Credits).
Our students have been selected for Post-graduation in various national level universities.

Environmental Sciences as a career offers immense job opportunities. It creates immense job opportunities such as environmental scientists, professors, researchers, environmental biologists, environmental modelers and environmental journalists, environmental consultants, environmental auditors, environmental managers etc. A candidate completing higher education through Masters or Doctoral degree in environmental sciences can get a good job opportunity in government, semi-government or private sector, according to his/her knowledge and experience.
The department has constituted an Eco-club namely "Green Rangers" and also established a "Vermi- composting demonstration unit" in the college.
